How odor removal works

Covering a smell doesn't get rid of it. We find where the odor starts, whether that is pet urine in the carpet pad, cigarette smoke in the walls or something musty behind them, then remove the materials that can't be saved and clean and treat the rest, including carpets, upholstery and air ducts. The same company does the repairs. We work in homes around Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin, and estimates are free.

Where Odors Come From

Why some smells won't go away

A smell that keeps coming back after cleaning usually has a source you can't see. It has soaked into padding, subfloor, drywall or ductwork, so air fresheners and surface cleaning only hide it for a while. Odors also come back on humid days, when moisture reactivates what soaked in. The odors we remove most often come from:

  • Pet urine that has soaked through carpet into the pad and subfloor
  • Cigarette smoke and nicotine residue on walls, ceilings and air ducts
  • Musty smells after water damage or a damp basement
  • Sewer backups, which leave odor and bacteria behind
  • Smoke from a fire, even when the damage looks small
  • Closed-up homes after a long Wisconsin winter, when windows stay shut and odors build

Our Odor Removal Services

What our odor removal includes

  • Finding the source. We track the odor to where it actually starts, which isn't always the room it's in, using moisture meters where liquid has soaked in.
  • Removing what can't be saved. Soaked carpet pad, stained drywall or insulation that holds the odor comes out.
  • Cleaning and treating. Carpets, upholstery, air ducts and other affected surfaces are treated at the source, not masked with fragrance.
  • Decontaminating. We clean and sanitize to remove bacteria and residue left behind by urine, sewage or smoke, and air scrubbers filter the air.
  • Repairs by the same company. Subfloor, flooring, drywall and paint, replaced by the same company so you don't need a second contractor.

Cost & Insurance

What does odor removal cost?

The price depends on where the odor is and how deep it goes, so we inspect first. The estimate is free.

What affects the price

  • What is causing the odor: pets, smoke, water or sewage
  • How many rooms, and whether it has reached the air ducts
  • Whether it has soaked into pad, subfloor or drywall
  • Which materials have to be removed and replaced
  • How much repair is needed afterward

Will insurance pay for it?

It depends on what caused the odor. Odor from a sudden, covered loss, like smoke from a house fire or a sewer backup on a policy that includes sewer backup coverage, may be part of that claim. Odors from pets or smoking are usually treated as maintenance and not covered. Every policy is different, so check yours.

When the odor is part of a claim, Recoveron works as a preferred vendor for major insurance companies and documents the damage and the work for your adjuster.

Odor removal questions

What kinds of odors can you remove?

We remove stubborn odors that regular cleaning hasn’t fixed. That includes pet urine, nicotine and cigarette smoke, musty smells, and odors left behind after water damage or a sewer backup. If you aren’t sure what’s causing a smell, we can inspect the home and find the source for you.

No. Recoveron finds the source of the odor first and removes it. We treat carpets, upholstery, air ducts and any other affected areas instead of masking the smell with fragrance, and we remove materials that hold the odor when cleaning alone won’t get it out.

Decontamination removes bacteria and other harmful substances that can be left behind along with an odor. It matters after pet accidents, a sewer backup or a hoarding situation, where removing the smell alone isn’t enough. We clean and sanitize the affected areas so the home is clean, not just odor-free.

Recoveron serves Green Bay and Northeast Wisconsin, including De Pere, Ashwaubenon, Appleton, Oshkosh, Manitowoc, Sheboygan, Door County, Wausau and nearby towns. We inspect in your home, from the Fox Valley to the lakeshore and up into Door County. Call 920-469-3473 to check your town and set up a free estimate.

It depends on the source of the odor, how many rooms are affected and whether it has soaked into padding, subfloor or drywall. A surface odor costs less to fix than one that has reached the subfloor or the air ducts. We inspect first and give you a free written estimate before any work starts.

It depends on the source and how far it has spread. A single room with a clear source is usually quicker than a whole house with smoke residue in the ducts. When materials have to be removed and replaced, the repairs add time. Your estimate includes a timeline so you can plan around it.

Because the urine usually isn’t only in the carpet. It soaks through into the pad and often the subfloor, where shampoo can’t reach, and the smell returns when the area gets humid. The fix is to find how far it went and treat or replace those layers. Our guide explains how professionals remove pet urine odor.
