You shampooed the carpet, sprayed the odor eliminator and opened the windows, and on the first humid day the smell came right back. That is normal with pet urine, and it is not because you didn't clean hard enough. The smell is usually coming from somewhere cleaning can't reach.
Why the smell keeps coming back
Urine doesn’t stay on the surface. It soaks through carpet into the pad underneath, and from there into the subfloor, the tack strip and the bottom of baseboards and drywall. As it dries it leaves salts behind, and humidity brings the odor back again and again.
Surface cleaning reaches the carpet fibers. The source is often an inch or two below them.
Why sprays and shampoos fall short
- Air fresheners and sprays cover the smell for a while without removing what causes it.
- Carpet shampooing cleans the top of the carpet but rarely reaches the pad or subfloor, and adding water can spread the urine wider underneath.
Step one: find every spot
Old urine spots are often invisible. Professionals use UV lights, which make urine stains show up, and moisture readings to find how far the urine traveled under the carpet. It is common to find far more spots than anyone knew about, especially along walls and in corners.
How it is treated at the source
What it takes depends on how deep the urine went:
- Surface only: treating the carpet and pad in the affected spots.
- Through the pad: replacing the pad in those areas, since it soaks up urine like a sponge.
- Into the subfloor: cleaning and sealing the subfloor so the odor is locked in, then replacing the pad and reinstalling or replacing the carpet.
- Baseboards and walls: treating or replacing the bottom of baseboards and drywall where urine wicked up.
The air in the home is treated as well, so the odor that has settled into the room goes with it.
Other stubborn odors
The same approach, find the source and remove it instead of masking it, works for nicotine and cigarette smoke, musty basement odors, and the smell left behind after water damage or a sewer backup.
